To rent a car in Langkawi you must be 23 or older, hold a valid driving licence for at least one year, and present ID plus a credit card for the refundable deposit. Tourists use an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home licence unless their licence is already in English and accepted under JPJ guidelines.
Licence rules for foreign visitors
Malaysia recognises IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Carry both IDP and original licence. Singapore and Brunei licences are commonly accepted for short stays; when in doubt, obtain an IDP before travel — it costs little and removes debate at pickup.
Deposit and payment
A pre-authorisation on credit card covers minor damage or fuel differences. Debit cards are not accepted for deposit. Full rental can be paid online via FPX, card, or at pickup in approved cases.
Additional drivers
Add a second driver at booking for a small daily fee. They must meet the same age and licence rules and present documents at pickup.
